Battery Services

Overview: Battery Services BrochurePDF

An uncontrolled energy release is hard to ignore, particularly when it involves a battery in a consumer or industrial product.

Batteries of various chemistries, capacities, and form factors appear in an increasing variety of products including consumer electronics (laptop computers, cellular telephones, PDA’s, digital cameras, MP3 players, mini DVD players), personal care products, medical devices, power tools, industrial appliances, backup power supplies, automotive products, and aerospace products, to name a few. On occasion, the batteries in these products fail, leading to performance or safety concerns, including reduced capacity, overheating, case rupture, and even flaming combustion. By using a multidisciplinary approach involving staff from a wide range of disciplines such as our Electrical, Fires & Explosions, Mechanics & Materials, and Data Analysis practices, we provide a broad range of independent third party consulting services including:

  • CTIA Battery Certification Program
  • Battery pack failure investigation
  • Manufacturing process and quality auditing
  • Regulatory compliance testing
  • Environmental stress and reliability testing
  • Battery pack and cell safety testing and performance evaluation
  • Investigation and support for recalls
  • Evaluation and testing of battery protection and power management circuits
  • Battery/battery protection design reviews
  • Customized testing for specific hazards
  • Design support for safety systems

Battery chemistries that Exponent has worked with include:

  • Alkaline
